THE 70's
In the 70’s, the end of the Vietnam War still worried society in the USA. This decade was also very influenced by the conflict between Arabs and Jews. The oil-producing countries grouped in the OPEC (Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) caused an energetic crisis in the developed countries by declaring an oil imbargo in order to rise its price. From that moment on, OPEC countries were the ones to fix the international price of oil.

The 70’s was also a terrible decade for the White House, as the political scandal called “Watergate” made President Richard Nixon to resign. The USA also imposed different military dictatorships in many Latin-American countries. Meanwhile, the USSR saw a decrease in its international influence and it started to keep a distance from the communist People's Republic of China.

HARD ROCK
Stylistic origins

Blues rock, psychedelic rock, garage rock, rock and roll, rhythm and blue
Cultural origins

Mid 1960's, United Kingdom and United States
Typical instruments

Electric guitar, bass guitar, vocal, drums and occasional use of pianos and keyboards

Derivative forms

Heavy metal, glam metal, glam rock, boogie rock, punk rock, grunge

Hard rock (or heavy rock) is a loosely defined subgenre of rock music which has its earliest roots in mid-1960's garage rock, blues rock and psychedelic rock.It is typified by a heavy use of
  • aggressive vocals,
  • distorted electric guitars,
  • bass guitar, drums,
  • and often accompanied with pianos and keyboards.
Hard rock developed into a major form of popular music in the 1970's, with bands such as Led Zeppelin, The Who, Deep Purple, Aerosmith and AC/DC, and reached a commercial peak in the 1980's. The glam metal of bands like Van Halen, Bon Jovi and Def Leppard and the rawer sounds of Guns N' Roses followed up with great success in the later part of that decade, before losing popularity with the commercial success of grunge and later Britpop in the 1990's. Despite this, many post-grunge bands adopted a hard rock sound and in the 2000's there came a renewed interest in established bands, attempts at a revival, and new hard rock bands that emerged from the garage rock and post-punk revival scenes.

AC/DC

The band was formed in December 1973 in Sydney, Australia. They were pioneers of hard rock but they also played blues. Their BACK TO BLACK album is an all-time best-selling hard rock album and also the third best-selling record in the world.AC-DC.jpgMembers:
  • Malcolm Young (rhythm guitar),
  • Angus Young (solo guitar) - brothers,
  • Brian Johnson (singer), Cliff Williams (bassist, background vocals) and
  • Phil Rudd (drummer).
The group’s name means alternative current / direct current. They wanted to find a short and easy to remember name that represents electronic hard rock. Malcolm’s little sister, Margaret noticed the AC/DC sign on the back of a sewing machine then Malcolm and his friends got to like it so much that they chose it for the name of their band.
The band made their official debut on 31 December at a club in Sydney. Soon they started touring but there were lots of changes in the band members. At the beginning they just remade hits by others, for example by the Beatles or Rolling Stones. They recorded their first composition in 1974. Since then they have had countless hits, including Highway to Hell.
They are included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The band is still going strong and has tours.

Forget the hearse 'cause I never die
I got nine lives
Cat's eyes
Abusin' every one of them and running wildCHORUS:
'Cause I'm back
Yes, I'm back
Well, I'm back
Yes, I'm back
Well, I'm back, back
(Well) I'm back in black
Yes, I'm back in black CHORUS

Well, I'm back, Yes I'm back
Well, I'm back, Yes I'm back
Well, I'm back, back
Well I'm back in black
Yes I'm back in black

AC/DC - Rock N'Roll Train

AC/DC - Highway to Hell

Lyrics: "Highway to Hell"

Highwell to Hell with lyrics
(karaoke version)

Living easy, living free
Season ticket on a one-way ride
Asking nothing, leave me be
Taking everything in my stride
Don't need reason, don't need rhyme
Ain't nothing I would rather do
Going down, party time
My friends are gonna be there too
I'm on the highway to hell
No stop signs, speed limit
Nobody's gonna slow me down
Like a wheel, gonna spin it
Nobody's gonna mess me round
Hey Satan, payed my dues
Playing in a rocking band
Hey Momma, look at me
I'm on my way to the promised land
I'm on the highway to hell
(Don't stop me)
And I'm going down, all the way down
I'm on the highway to hell

HEAVY METAL

Stylistic origins
Blues rock, psychedelic rock
Cultural origins
Late 1960's, United Kingdom and United States
Typical instruments
Electric guitar, bass guitar, drums, vocals, keyboards
Heavy metal (often referred to as metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960's and early 1970's, largely in the United Kingdom and the United States. With roots in blues rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. Heavy metal lyrics and performance styles are often associated with masculinity, aggression and machismo.
The first heavy metal bands such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath attracted large audiences, though they were often derided by critics, a status common throughout the history of the genre. In the mid-1970's Judas Priest helped spur the genre's evolution by discarding much of its blues influence; Motörhead introduced a punk rock sensibility and an increasing emphasis on speed. Bands in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal such as Iron Maiden and Saxon followed in a similar vein. Before the end of the decade, heavy metal fans became known as "metalheads" or "headbangers".
During the 1980's, glam metal became a commercial force with groups like Mötley Crüe and Poison. Underground scenes produced an array of more extreme, aggressive styles: thrash metal broke into the mainstream with bands such as Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax, while other styles of the most extreme subgenres of metal like death metal and black metal remain subcultural phenomena. Since the mid-1990s, popular styles such as groove metal (e.g. Pantera) which blends extreme metal with hardcore punk, and nu metal (e.g. Slipknot), which often incorporates elements of grunge and hip hop; and metalcore have further expanded the definition of the genre.

AEROSMITH

Who-are-aerosmith.jpgAEROSMITH was established in 1970 when Steven Tyler joined the two members of Jam Band, Tom Hamilton (bassist) and Joe Perry (drummer). Joe Kramer (drummer) also joined the band and so did Brad Withford (guitarist). Thus the original lineup of the band seemed to appear.
The big breakthrough came in 1975, brought on by the ’Toys int he attic’. The album ’Rocks’ released after it made them a superstar. The problem of drug abuse inhibited the career of the band. During the four decades of their career they had an influence on many bands like Metallica.
They have been one of the best known bands in the world. They have the most gold and platinum records. In addition, they have a lot of music awards, including 4 Grammy Prizes.
In 2010 they were included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Also, they got on the chart of the best-ever performers.
Even now they have sold out stadium concerts. They also do concerts to help others, including the victims of Hurricane Sandy or the Boston marathon bombings.

Aerosmith - Livin'on the Edge
(with lyrics)

Can't Stop Lovin' You
(duet with Carrie Underwood)

There's somethin' wrong with the world today
I don't kow what it is
Something's wrong with our eyes

We're seeing things in a different way
And God knows it ain't His
It sure ain't no surprise

We're livin' on the edge
We're livin' on the edge
We're livin' on the edge
We're livin' on the edge

There's somethin' wrong with the world today
The light bulb's gettin' dim
There's meltdown in the sky

If you can judge a wise man
By the color of his skin
Then mister you're a better man that I

We're livin' on the edge
You can't help yourself from fallin'
Livin' on the edge
You can't help yourself at all
Livin' on the edge
You can't stop yourself from fallin'
Livin' on the edge

Tell me what you think about your sit-u-a-tion
Complication - aggravation
Is getting to you

If chicken little tells you that the sky is fallin'
Even if it wasn't would you still come crawlin'
Back again?
I bet you would my friend
Again & again & again & again & again

(solo)

Tell me what you think about your sit-u-a-tion
Complication - aggravation
Is getting to you

If chicken little tells you that the sky is fallin'
Even if it was would would you still come crawlin'
Back again?
I bet you would my friend
Again & again & again & again

There's something right with the world today
And everybody knows it's wrong
But we can tell 'em no or we could let it go
But I would rather be a hanging on

Livin' On the Edge
You can't help yourself from fallin'
Livin' On the Edge
You can't help yourself at all
Livin' On the Edge
You can't stop yourself from fallin'
Livin' On the Edge
Livin' On the Edge
Livin' On the Edge
Livin' On the Edge
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
I fell from holy Moses mountain,
Where love’s a slippery slope
And all the others I’ve been hanging with,
Never gave me too much room
Then one day she came to me,
Love at first sight, head to toes
I love her wild, my mountain child
And that’s just how she goes
And here she got

Hey, I can’t stop loving you
Cause it’s all I wanna do
Yeah the world needs more of this,
Tell me what you put into that kiss,
Now keep that coming on,
Let me hear my favorite song
Yeah you’re all I wanna do,
Cause I can’t stop loving you

Got me a good old time and cowboy
He got my picture on the fridge
And the first time when he kissed me,
We was high up on the ridge
And when we came down from the mountain,
I will ride with my mckean
And for all it costs, for getting lost,
There ain’t no better sin,
Here we go again

You know I can’t stop loving you
Cause it’s all I wanna do
Yeah the world needs more of this,
Tell me what you put into that kiss,
Now keep that coming on,
Let me hear my favorite song
Yeah you’re all I wanna do,
Cause I can’t stop loving you

When I wake up and see your face
All that jump in a picture lace
And that there’s nowhere else I would rather be
Then all tied up in this rhapsody

Hey, I can’t stop loving you
Cause it’s all I wanna do
Yeah the world needs more of this,
Tell me what you put into that kiss, yeah
Now keep that coming on,
Let my hear my favorite song
Yeah you’re all I wanna do,
Cause I can’t stop loving you

GLAM ROCK

This music style appeared in the 70's in the UK as some people believed that rock music was far too hard. While rock was getting harder (Hard Rock and Heavy Metal), some people wanted to make rock nicer, softer and to give "glamour" to rock music. The main characteristics of Glam Rock music were:
- Nice and easy recognisable melodies.
- Ususally a soft accompaniment.
- Provocative attitude (ambiguous/queer)- Great importance to their appearance, this is to say to look more "glamourous". In order to achieve this flashy and striking appearance, they used sequin clothes, platform shoes, top hats, glitter, make up, feather boas...
The main figures of Glam Rock were David Bowie, Elton John and the British band QUEEN.

QUEEN

BIOGRAPHY
Queen1.jpg "Queen" was a British rock band created in 1970 in London by the singer Freddie Mercury, the guitarist Brian May, the drummer Roger Taylor and by the bass player John Deacon. The group was very successful in Great Britain in the mid-70’s with albums like “A night at the opera”. This album had a wideworld impact and peaked first place in the international music charts. "Queen" was regarded as one of the most important bands, with different influences ranging from Hard Rock to Heavy Metal, mixing together elements from Glam Rock, Progressive Rock, Folk music, Blues and Pop music. Unfortunately Freddie Mercury died on 22nd November 1991 because of AIDS, and the importance of the group without their main figure started to fade away.

LYRICS: "We are the champions"
I’ve paid my dues
Time after time
I’ve done my sentence
But committed no crime
And bad mistakes I’ve made a few
I’ve had my shelves and kicked in my face
But I’ve come through

We are the champions my friend
And we’ll keep on fighting till the end
We are the champions
We are the champions
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions of the world

I’ve taken my bows
my curtain calls
You brought me fame and fortune
And everything that goes with it
I thank you all
But it’s been no bed of roses
No pleasure cruise
I consider it a challenge before
All human race
And I ain’t gonna lose

We are the champions my friend
And we’ll keep in fighting till the end
We are the champions
We are the champions
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions of the world

We are the champions my friend
And we’ll keep in fighting till the end
Ooh, we are the champions
We are the champions
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions

As for tempo, we can say it is Moderato, in other words moderately fast. The instruments that we can hear in this song are the piano, the drums, the electric guitar and the electric bass. DISCO MUSIC

Disco music appeared in the 70's in the USA, and some films like "Saturday Night Fever" and "Thank God it's Friday!" helped to rise its popularity. This music style had influences from R&B, Pop and Jazz, and was specifically intended to be danced in discos. The melodies were catchy and repetitive, as well as easy to dance thanks to its regular rhythm usually structured on a repetitive beat of 4/4. Disco music used sythesizers (electrophone instruments which imitated the sound of different instruments), as well as a string section (violins, violas, cellos...) and brass instruments usually playing the melody, while the instrumental base was played by the keyboard and the electric guitar. Disco looks consisted in wearing slim fit clothes, platform shoes and an afro hairstyle.

Some of the most important Disco groups were the Bee Gees, the Village People, ABBA and Boney M.

BONEY M

BIOGRAPHY
Boney M05.jpgBoney M was a disco music group from different Caribbean islands and nationalites. The four members of the group were the singers Marcia Barret and Liz Mitchell from Jamaica, Maizie Williams from Montserrat island, and the dancer and singer Bobby Farrel from Aruba. He died in 2010 and the group split up then. Their first album was called "Take the heat off me" with their most popular song "Daddy Cool". Boney M was the first band from Western Europe to play in a communist country. They played in Moscow (USSR) in December 1978, but their song "Rasputin" was banned by the Soviet authorities during their concert in the Russian capital city. However, Boney M was very popular in the USSR in the 70's.

LYRICS: "Rasputin"
There lived a certain man in Russia long ago
He was big and strong, in his eyes a flaming glow
Most people looked at him with terror and with fear
But to Moscow chicks he was such a lovely dear
He could preach the bible like a preacher
Full of ecstasy and fire
But he also was the kind of teacher
Women would desire

RA RA RASPUTIN
Lover of the Russian queen
There was a cat that really was gone
RA RA RASPUTIN
Russia's greatest love machine
It was a shame how he carried on

He ruled the Russian land and never mind the czar
But the kasachok he danced really wunderbar
In all affairs of state he was the man to please
But he was real great when he had a girl to squeeze
For the queen he was no wheeler dealer
Though she'd heard the things he'd done
She believed he was a holy healer
Who would heal her son

RA RA RASPUTIN
Lover of the Russian queen
There was a cat that really was gone
RA RA RASPUTIN
Russia's greatest love machine
It was a shame how he carried on

(Spoken:)
But when his drinking and lusting and his hunger
for power became known to more and more people,
the demands to do something about this outrageous
man became louder and louder.

"This man's just got to go!" declared his enemies
But the ladies begged "Don't you try to do it, please"
No doubt this Rasputin had lots of hidden charms
Though he was a brute they just fell into his arms
Then one night some men of higher standing
Set a trap, they're not to blame
"Come to visit us" they kept demanding
And he really came

RA RA RASPUTIN
Lover of the Russian queen
They put some poison into his wine
RA RA RASPUTIN
Russia's greatest love machine
He drank it all and said "I feel fine"

RA RA RASPUTIN
Lover of the Russian queen
They didn't quit, they wanted his head
RA RA RASPUTIN
Russia's greatest love machine
And so they shot him till he was dead

(Spoken:) Oh, those Russians...

MUSICAL REVIEW
This song is about Rasputin, a Russian monk and the czar's counselor. As some people said during his life, he had a love affair with the Russian queen but many people, and specially very important and influential people, hated him and plotted the way to get rid of him. He was invited by some importany people to a special dinner and he was poisoned, but he didn't die! So they just shot him until he finally died.
As far as tempo is concerned, it is Allegro, in other words fast. As for time, it is duple time.We can hear different instruments such as a balalaika (a Russian plucked string instrument) and some violins (surely played by a synthesizer), a keyboard and the drums, as well as people clapping their hands following the beat.

Lyrics

" NO WOMAN, NO CRY "

Said said
Said I remember when we used to sit
In the government yard in Trenchtown
Oba, ob-serving the hypocrites
As they would mingle with the good people we meet
Good friends we have had, oh good friends we've lost along the way
In this bright future you can't forget your past
So dry your tears I say

No woman, no cry
No woman, no cry
Oh my Little sister, don't she'd no tears
No woman, no cry

Said, said, said I remember when we used to sit
In the government yard in Trenchtown
And then Georgie would make the fire light
Log wood burnin' through the night
Then we would cook corn meal porridge
Of which I'll share with you

My feet is my only carriage
So I've got to push on through
But while I'm gone...

Everything's gonna be alright
Ev'rything's gonna be alright
Ev'rything's gonna be alright
Ev'rything's gonna be alright
Ev'rything's gonna be alright
Ev'rything's gonna be alright
Ev'rything's gonna be alright
Ev'rything's gonna be alright

No woman, no cry
No, no woman, no woman, no cry
Oh, little sister, don't she'd no tears
No woman, no cry

No woman, no woman, no woman, no cry
No woman, no cry
Oh, my little darlyn no she'd no tears
No woman, no cry, yeah

PUNK

punk-colours-i11187.jpg

Punk music began to emerge in the early seventies in the East Coast of the United States , particularly in New York and Detroit. This musical movement was then identified as a continuation of the garage rock of the sixties, whose typical feature was , in fact , an raw essence and very direct , as compared to other kinds of rock & roll . It could also be defined as hard rock , in fact groups like MC5 , The Stooges and Patti Smith were musicians who were inspired in part by this style . Among the most well-known proto- punk groups we can number: The Stooges , MC5 , Iggy Pop, New York Dolls, Talking Heads , Television , Blondie , Devo, Patti Smith and many others. These groups were then identified as garage rock , hard rock, glam rock or simply rock & roll . Some groups of the early seventies in fact, incorporated typical elements of glam rock , all of the New York Dolls , and Iggy Pop, but also David Bowie, Roxy Music and others. This first phase will be called "proto- punk" , as these groups featured typical stylistic elements of punk rock, even before its birth and therefore its recognition . By late 1976 bands such as The Sex Pistols, The Clash, the damned in London, The Ramones and the Television in New York city were recognized as the vanguard of a new musical movement.

The Sex Pistols were one of the most influential British punk rock groups and a large icon of the first wave punk .The beginning of the group, originally composed by vocalist Johnny Rotten , guitarist Steve Jones , drummer Paul Cook and bassist Glen Matlock was replaced by Sid Vicious , dates back to 1975 , in London. Although their career lasted only three years , releasing only four singles and record a studio album , the Sex Pistols have been described by the BBC as "the only English punk rock band ." The group is often referred to as the founder of the British punk movement and the creator of the first generation gap with rock ' n' roll.
The Sex Pistols emerged as a response to what was always seen as the most excessive , such as the progressive rock and pop productions of the mid-seventies . The group created a lot of controversy during his short career , drawing attention to himself , but by often overshadow the music. Their shows and their tours were repeatedly thwarted by the authorities and their public appearances often ended disastrously . The 1977 single God Save the Queen , published specially during the silver jubilee of the Queen of England , was considered an attack on the British monarchy and nationalism . LYRICS

" GOD SAVE THE QUEEN "

Queen.jpg

God save the queen

The fascist regime

They made you a moron

Potential H-bomb

God save the queen

She ain't no human being

There is no future

In England's dreaming

Don't be told what you want

Don't be told what you need

There's no future, no future,

No future for you

God save the queen

We mean it man

We love our queen

God saves

God save the queen

'Cause tourists are money

And our figurehead

Is not what she seems

Oh God save history

God save your mad parade

Oh Lord God have mercy

All crimes are paid

When there's no future

How can there be sin

We're the flowers in the dustbin

We're the poison in your human machine

We're the future, your future

God save the queen

We mean it man

We love our queen

God saves

God save the queen

We mean it man

And there is no future

In England's dreaming

No future, no future,

No future for you

No future, no future,

No future for me

No future, no future,

No future for you

No future, no future

For you

FUNKY

Funk is a very distinct style of music based on R&B that reached its height in popularity from the late 1960s to late 1970s. Its name originated in the 1950s, when "funk" and "funky" were used increasingly as adjectives in the context of soul music -- the meaning being transformed from the original one of a pungent odor to a re-defined meaning of a strong, distinctive groove.

One of the most distinctive features of funk music is the role played by bass guitar. Before soul music, bass was rarely prominent in popular music.
Players like the legendary Motown bassist James Jamerson brought bass to the forefront, and Funk built on that foundation, with melodic basslines often being the centerpiece of songs. Other noteworthy funk bassists include Bootsy Collins and Larry Graham of Sly & the Family Stone. Graham is often credited with inventing the percussive "slap bass technique," which was further developed by later bassists and became a distictive element of funk.

I Feel Good

SOUL

Soul music was, fundamentally, a consequence of rock music. The leadership went from the blacks (rhythm'n'blues) to the whites (rock'n'roll) back to the blacks (soul). Soul music was everything that rock music was: dance music, personal expression, teenage angst, political rebellion. Rock'n'roll had stolen the body (the sound) of rhythm'n'blues, and soul music stole the soul (the spirit) of rock'n'roll.
From the musical viewpoint, the aesthetic priorities of soul music were rather different from those of blues music. The singer was still the center of action, but the arrangement (the ambience, the soundscape) was way more important than in rhythm'n'blues. The great figures of soul music were, first and foremost, arrangers.
At the same time, soul music introduced a new form of dancing: elegant, sensual and nonetheless primal.

Don't Play That Song (You Lied) - 1970

DON'T PLAY THAT SONG LYRICS - ARETHA FRANKLIN

Don't play that song for me
'Cause it brings back memories
Of days that I once knew
The days that I spent with you
Oh no, don't let him play it
It fills my heart with pain
Please stop it right away
I remember just-a what he said

He said darling, "Darling, I love you"
And I know that he lied
"Darling, I love you"
You know that you lied
"Darling, I love you"
You know that you lied, you lied,
You lied, lied, lied, lied (to me)

Hey Mr., don't play it no more
Don't play it no more
I can't stand it, don't play it no more
don't play it no more, no more, no more

I Remember on our first date
He kissed me and he walked away
I was only seventeen
I didn't think he could be so mean

He told me darling
"Darling, I love you"
Baby, baby you lied
"Darling, I need you"
Oooooh you lied
"Darling, I love you"
You know that you lied, lied, lied (to me)

Ohh darling
"Darling, I love you"
You know that you lied
"Darling I need you"
You know I know you lied
"Darling, I love you:
Darling you lied, you lied, you lied
Oooh you lied to me
Don't play it no more
I can't stand it
Don't play it no more
(repeat to fade)

Aretha Franklin & Ray Charles - It Takes Two To Tango - 1975

TAKES TWO TO TANGO
You can haunt any house by yourself
Be a man or a mouse by yourself
You can act like a king on a throne
There are lots of things that you can do alone
But it takes two to tango two to tango
Two to really get the feeling of romance
Two to tango two to tango do the dance of love
You can sail on a ship by yourself
Take a nap or nip by yourself
You can get into debt on your own
There are lots of things that you can do alone
But it takes …………..
You can get very old by yourself
Catch a fish or a cold by yourself
Dig a ditch or strike it rich all by yourself
There are lots of things that you can do alone

But it takes ……

You can fight like a champ by yourself
You can lick any stamp by yourself
You can be very brave on the phone
There are lots of things that you can do alone
But it takes …………….
It Takes two, I say two
Darling it always takes two
I’m with you

THE 80's

The beginning of the 80's is characterised by the Cold War between the USA and the USSR. International terrorism intensified and the USA bombed Muammar Gaddafi’s Libya in 1986. Africa suffered a terrible famine during this decade due to drought, which affected many countries in this continent, especially Ethiopia. Meanwhile, Latin America underwent a huge social and political crisis because of political corruption and different armed conflicts.

On 26 April 1986, a catastrophic nuclear accident took place at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine (at that moment part of the USSR). An explosion and fire released large quantites of of radioactive particles into the atmosphere, which spread over the western part of the USSR and Europe. The Chernobyl disaster is considered to be the worst nuclear accident in history.

bp2.jpg Workers-remove-radioactiv-0012.jpg

In 1981 people became aware of the existence of AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), which was to become an epidemic of huge and devastating proportions in the future decades. That same year, Pope John Paul II was shot and crically wounded at Saint Peter's Square in Rome by Mehmet Ali Agca, a Turkish gunman who was member of a fascist group. Karol Wojtyla had to undergo major surgery and fortunately he recovered from it, while Mehmet Agca was caught by the police and he was sentenced to life imprisonment.

By the end of the 80's, the Cold War was coming to an end. In 1989 the USSR and the Soviet power were extremely weak and in November that same year, the Berlin Wall, which separated West Berlin from East Berlin and East Germany, was torn down by the same Berliners, fact considered to be the beginning of the fall of Communist power in Europe.

As far as music is concerned, the 80’s saw the emergence of New Wave and Dance music. Rock music continued to have a wide audience. The 80’s are usually associated with the use of synthesizers and other electronic non-traditional instruments. Moreover, during this decade several electronic music genres were developed, such as Electro, Techno and House, which were to become really popular in the 90's.
Throughout this decade, R&B, Hip-Hop and different kinds of urban music became widespread. Rap was especially succesful by the end of this decade with the advent of the golden age of Hip-Hop. These urban music genres, rap and Hip-Hop in particular, will continue their rising in popularity throught the 90’s and the 2000’s.

MTV (Music Television) was launched and music videos began to have a larger effect on the record industry. Pop artists such as Michael Jackson, Withney Houston, Madonna and Queen helped turn this product into a profitable business.

NEW WAVE
New wave is a music genre that originated from rock. New wave is a term that was later used when talking about a group of music styles popular in the 1908s. The term new wave was first used by the Site Records manager, Seymour Stein, believing that the term "punk" would mean poor sales for Sire's acts who had frequently played the club CBGB, launched a "Don't Call It Punk" campaign designed to replace the term with "new wave".
At first new wave was analogous to punk rock before branching as a distinctly identified genre, incorporating electronic/experimental music, mod, disco and pop. It evolved into subgenres and fusions, including New Romantic and gothic rock. Common characteristics of new wave music, aside from its punk influences, include the use of synthesizers and electronic productions, the importance of styling and the arts, as well as a great amount of diversity.

Dire Straits were a British rock band, formed in 1977 by Mark Knopfler, his younger brother David Knopfler, John Illsley, and Pick Withers. Mark Knopfler was the lead singer and the lead guitar player, his brother David Knopfler played the rhythm guitar and sang backing vocals, whereas John Illsley played the bass guitar, and Pick Withers played the drums and the percussion.

Dire Straits' sound originated from a variety of musical influences, including jazz, folk, blues, and was probably closest to beat music. Despite the popularity of punk rock during the band's early years, the band's stripped-down sound contrasted with punk, demonstrating a more "rootsy" pub rock. Many of Dire Straits' compositions were melancholic.Dire Straits' biggest selling album, Brothers in Arms, has sold over 30 million copies.

Dire Straits became one of the world's most commercially successful bands, with worldwide album sales of over 120 million copies. Dire Straits won numerous music awards during their career, including four Grammy Awards, three Brit Awards—winning Best British Group twice, and two MTV Video Music Awards. The band's most popular songs include "Sultans of Swing", "Lady Writer", "Romeo and Juliet", "Tunnel of Love", "Telegraph Road", "Private Investigations", "Money for Nothing", "Walk of Life", "So Far Away", "Your Latest Trick" and "Brothers in Arms".

Dire Straits' career was as long as 15 years. The band originally split up in 1988, but reformed in 1991. Dire Straits finished playing toghether for good in 1995 when Mark Knopfler launched his career as a solo artist. There were several changes in personnel over both periods, leaving Mark Knopfler and John Illsley as the only two original bandmates who had remained throughout the band's career.

DIRE STRAITS - SULTANS OF SWING

You get a shiver in the dark,
It's raining in the park, but meantime:
South of the river, you stop and you hold everything.
A band is blowin' Dixie, double-four time.
You feel alright when you hear that music play.

You step inside, but you don't see too many faces.
Comin' in out of the rain to hear the jazz go down.
Competition in other places...
But the horns, they blowin' that sound.
Way on down south,
Way on down south, London-town

Check out Guitar George, he knows all the chords.
But it's strictly rhythm; he doesn't want to make it cry or sing.
If any old guitar is all he can afford,
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing.

And Harry doesn't mind if he doesn't make the scene.
He's got a daytime job, he's doing alright.
He can play the honky tonk like anything,
Savin' it up for Friday night.
With the Sultans,
With the Sultans of Swing

And a crowd of young boys, they're fooling around in the corner,
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles.
The don't give a damn about any trumpet playing band.
It ain't what they call rock and roll.
And the Sultans,
Yes the Sultans play Creole.

And then the man, he steps right up to the microphone.
And says at last, just as the time bell rings,
"Goodnight, now it's time to go home."
And he makes it fast, with one more thing:
"We're the Sultans,
We are the Sultans of Swing."

DIRE STRAITS - BROTHERS IN ARMS

These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be
Some day you'll return to
Your valleys and your farms
And you'll no longer burn
To be brothers in arms

Through these fields of destruction
Baptism of fire
I've witnessed your suffering
As the battles raged higher
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms

There's so many different worlds
So many different suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones

Now the sun's gone to hell
And the moon's riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But it's written in the starlight
And every line on your palm
We're fools to make war
On our brothers in arms

U2 are an Irish rock band from Dublin. They were formed in 1976. The group consists of Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen, Jr. Bono is the singer and the guitar player, The Edge plays the guitar and the keyboards, Adam Clayton plays the bass guitar and Jr. plays the drums and the percussuion. U2's early sound was rooted in post-punk but eventually grew to incorporate influences from many genres of popular music. Throughout the group's musical career, they have maintained a sound built on melodic instrumentals, highlighted by The Edge's timbrally varied guitar sounds and Bono's expressive vocals. Their lyrics focus on personal and sociopolitical themes.

U2 formed at Mount Temple Comprehensive School in 1976 when the members were teenagers with limited musical proficiency. Within four years, they signed with Island Records and released their debut album "Boy". By the mid-1980s, they became a top international band. They were really successful as a touring band, more than they were at selling records, until their breakthrough in 1987. The album "The Joshua Tree" elevated the band's stature "from heroes to superstars".

Later, reacting to musical stagnation and criticism of their earnest image and musical direction in the late-1980s, the group reinvented themselves with their 1991 hit album "Achtung Baby" and the accompanying Zoo TV Tour. U2 integrated dance, industrial, and alternative rock influences into their sound. U2 regained critical and commercial favour in the 2000s with the records "All That You Can't Leave Behind" (2000) and "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" (2004). Their U2 360° Tour from 2009–2011 was the highest-attended and highest-grossing concert tour in history.

U2 have released 12 studio albums and are among the all-time best-selling music artists, having sold more than 150 million records worldwide. They have won 22 Grammy Awards, more than any other band, and in 2005, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility. Rolling Stone ranked U2 at number 22 in its list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time" and has labelled them the "Biggest Band in the World". Throughout their career, as a band and as individuals, they have campaigned for human rights and philanthropic causes, including Amnesty International, the ONE/DATA campaigns, Product Red, and The Edge's Music Rising.

U2 - WITH OR WITHOUT YOU

See the stone set in your eyes
See the thorn twist in your side
I wait for you

Sleight of hand and twist of fate
On a bed of nails she makes me wait
And I wait without you

With or without you
With or without you

Through the storm we reach the shore
You give it all but I want more
And I'm waiting for you

With or without you
With or without you
I can't live
With or without you

And you give yourself away
And you give yourself away
And you give
And you give
And you give yourself away

My hands are tied
My body bruised, she's got me with
Nothing to win and
Nothing left to lose

And you give yourself away
And you give yourself away
And you give
And you give
And you give yourself away

With or without you
With or without you
I can't live
With or without you

With or without you
With or without you
I can't live
With or without you
With or without you

U2 - VERTIGO

Uno, dos, tres... catorce
[Spoken vocal]
Turn it up loud, Captain!

Lights go down it’s dark
The jungle is your head - can’t rule your heart
A feeling is so much stronger than
A thought
Your eyes are wide
And though your soul it can’t be bought
Your mind can wonder

Hello, hello... (Hola)
I'm at a place called Vertigo (dónde estás?)
It’s everything I wish I didn’t know
Except you give me something...
I can feel, feel

The night is full of holes
As bullets rip the sky of ink with gold
They twinkle as the boys play rock and roll
They know that they can’t dance - at least they know

I can’t stand the beats
I’m asking for the cheque
The girl with crimson nails
Has Jesus 'round her neck
Swinging to the music Whoooaaa
Swinging to the music Whoooaaa
Whoooaaa
Whoooaaa
Whoooaaa

Hello, hello... (Hola)
I'm at a place called Vertigo (dónde estás?)
It’s everything I wish I didn’t know
But you give me something...
I can feel, feel

Check mated...
Hours of fun...
Jumping in... yeah

[Edge solo]

All of this... all of this can be yours
All of this... all of this can be yours
All of this... all of this can be yours
Just give me what I want and no one gets hurt

Hello, hello... (Hola)
I'm at a place called Vertigo (dónde estás?)
Lights go down and all I know
That you give me something...
I can feel your love teaching me how
Your love is teaching me how to kneel, kneel

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, YEAH,
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, YEEEAAAAH!

"GOLDENEYE"

See reflections on the water
More than darkness in the depths
See him surface in every shadow
On the wind I feel his breath

Goldeneye I found his weakness
Goldeneye he'll do what I please
Goldeneye no time for sweetness
But a bitter kiss
Will bring him to his knees

You'll never know how I watched you
From the shadows as a child
You'll never know how it feels
To be the one who's left behind
You'll never know the days, the nights,
The tears, the tears I've cried
But now my time has come
And time, time is not on your side

See him move through smoke and mirrors
Feel his presence in the crowd
Other girls they gather around him
If I had him I wouldn't let him out

Goldeneye not lace or leather
Golden chain take him to the spot
Goldeneye I'll show him forever
It'll take forever to see what I've got

You'll never know how I watched you
From the shadows as a child
You'll never know how it feels
To get so close and be denied
It's a gold and honey trap
I've got for you tonight
Revenge is to kiss,
This time I won't miss
Now I've got you in my sight
With a Goldeneye,
Golden, Goldeneye
With a Goldeneye, Goldeneye

Thriller

t's close to midnight
Something evil's lurkin'in the dark
Under the moonlight
You see a sight that almost stops your heart
You try to scream
But terror takes the sound before you make it
You start to freeze
As horror looks you right between the eyes
You're paralyzed

'Cause this is thriller
Thriller at night
And no one's gonna save you
From the beast about to strike
You know it's thriller
Thriller at night
You're fighting for your life
Inside a killer
Thriller tonight, yeah

You hear the door slam
And realize there's nowhere left to run
You feel the cold hand
And wonder if you'll ever see the sun
You close your eyes
And hope that this is just imagination
But all the while
You hear a creature creepin' up behind
You're outta time

'Cause this is thriller
Thriller at night
There ain't no second chance
Against the thing with the forty eyes, girl
Thriller
Thriller at night
You're fighting for your life
Inside a killer
Thriller tonight

Night creatures callin'
The dead start to walk in their masquerade
There's no escaping the jaws of the alien this time
(They're open wide)
This is the end of your life
They're out to get you
There's demons closing in on every side
They will possess you
Unless you change that number on your dial
Now is the time
For you and I to cuddle close together, yeah

All through the night
I'll save you from the terror on the screen
I'll make you see

That this is thriller
Thriller at night
'Cause I can thrill you more
Than any ghoul would ever dare try
(Thriller)
(Thriller at night)
So let me hold you tight
And share a
(Killer, diller, chiller)
(Thriller here tonight)

'Cause this is thriller
Thriller at night
Girl, I can thrill you more
Than any ghoul would ever dare try
(Thriller)
(Thriller at night)
So let me hold you tight
And share a
(Killer, thriller)

I'm gonna thrill you tonight

Darkness falls across the land
The midnight hour is close at hand
Creatures crawl in search of blood
To terrorize y'alls neighborhood
And whosoever shall be found
Without the soul for getting down
Must stand and face the hounds of hell
And rot inside a corpse's shell

I'm gonna thrill you tonight
(Thriller, thriller)
I'm gonna thrill you tonight
(Thriller night, thriller))
I'm gonna thrill you tonight
Ooh, babe, I'm gonna thrill you tonight
Thriller at night, babe

The foulest stench is in the air
The funk of forty thousand years
And grizzly ghouls from every tomb
Are closing in to seal your doom
And though you fight to stay alive
Your body starts to shiver
For no mere mortal can resist
The evil of the thriller

"Holiday"

Holiday Celebrate
Holiday Celebrate

[Chorus:]

If we took a holiday
Took some time to celebrate
Just one day out of life
It would be, it would be so nice

Everybody spread the word
We're gonna have a celebration
All across the world
In every nation
It's time for the good times
Forget about the bad times, oh yeah
One day to come together
To release the pressure
We need a holiday

[chorus]

You can turn this world around
And bring back all of those happy days
Put your troubles down
It's time to celebrate
Let love shine
And we will find
A way to come together
And make things better
We need a holiday

[chorus]

Holiday Celebrate
Holiday Celebrate

[chorus]

Holiday Celebrate
Holiday Celebrate

Holiday, Celebration
Come together in every nation

"Material Girl"

Some boys kiss me, some boys hug me
I think they're O.K.
If they don't give me proper credit
I just walk away

They can beg and they can plead
But they can't see the light, that's right
'Cause the boy with the cold hard cash
Is always Mister Right, 'cause we are

[Chorus:]

Living in a material world
And I am a material girl
You know that we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl

Some boys romance, some boys slow dance
That's all right with me
If they can't raise my interest then I
Have to let them be

Some boys try and some boys lie but
I don't let them play
Only boys who save their pennies
Make my rainy day, 'cause they are

[chorus]

Living in a material world (material)
Living in a material world
[repeat]

Boys may come and boys may go
And that's all right you see
Experience has made me rich
And now they're after me, 'cause everybody's

[chorus]

A material, a material, a material, a material world

Living in a material world (material)
Living in a material world
[repeat and fade]

"Like A Virgin"

I made it through the wilderness
Somehow I made it through
Didn't know how lost I was
Until I found you

I was beat incomplete
I'd been had, I was sad and blue
But you made me feel
Yeah, you made me feel
Shiny and new

[Chorus:]

Like a virgin
Touched for the very first time
Like a virgin
When your heart beats [after first time, "With your heartbeat"]
Next to mine

Gonna give you all my love, boy
My fear is fading fast
Been saving it all for you
'Cause only love can last

You're so fine and you're mine
Make me strong, yeah you make me bold
Oh your love thawed out
Yeah, your love thawed out
What was scared and cold

[chorus]

Oooh, oooh, oooh

You're so fine and you're mine
I'll be yours 'till the end of time
'Cause you made me feel
Yeah, you made me feel
I've nothing to hide

[chorus]

Like a virgin, ooh, ooh
Like a virgin
Feels so good inside
When you hold me, and your heart beats, and you love me

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Ooh, baby
Can't you hear my heart beat
For the very first time?

"True Blue"

I've had other guys
I've looked into their eyes
But I never knew love before
'Til you walked through my door
I've had other lips
I've sailed a thousand ships
But no matter where I go
You're the one for me baby this I know, 'cause it's

[Chorus:]

True love
You're the one I'm dreaming of
Your heart fits me like a glove
And I'm gonna be true blue baby I love you

I've heard all the lines
I've cried oh so many times
Those tear drops they won't fall again
I'm so excited 'cause you're my best friend
So if you should ever doubt
Wonder what love is all about
Just think back and remember dear
Those words whispered in your ear, I said

[chorus twice]

[Intermediate:]

No more sadness, I kiss it good-bye
The sun is bursting right out of the sky
I searched the whole world for someone like you
Don't you know, don't you know that it's

True love, oh baby, true love, oh baby
True love, oh baby, true love it's
[repeat]

True, so if you should ever doubt
Wonder what love is all about
Just think back and remember dear
Those words whispered in your ear, I said

[intermediate]
[chorus]

'Cause it's

True love, oh baby, true love, oh baby
True love, oh baby, true love it's
[repeat]

"I Wanna Dance With Somebody"

Clocks strikes upon the hour
And the sun begins to fade
Still enough time to figure out
How to chase my blues away
I've done alright up 'til now
It's the light of day that shows me how
And when the night falls loneliness calls

[Chorus:]
Oh! Wanna dance with somebody
I wanna feel the heat with somebody
Yeah! Wanna dance with somebody
With somebody who loves me

I've been in love and lost my senses
Spinning through the town
Soon or later the fever ends
And I wind up feeling down
I need a man who'll take a chance
On a love that burns hot enough to last
So when the night falls
My lonely heart calls

[chorus]

"All At Once"

All at once,
I finally took a moment and I'm realizing that
Your not coming back
And it finally hit me all at once
All at once,
I started counting teardrops and at least a million fell
My eyes began to swell,
And all my dreams were shattered all at once

[Chorus:]
Ever since I met you
You're the only love I've known
And I can't forget you
Though I must face it all alone
All at once, I'm drifting on a lonely see
Wishing you'd come back to me
And that's all that matters now
All at once, I'm drifting on a lonely sea
Holding on to memories
And it hurts me more than you know
So much more than it shows
All at once

All at once,
I looked around and found that you were with another love
In someone else's arms,
And all my dreams were shattered, all at once
All at once
The smile that used to greet me brightened someone else's day
She took your smile away
And left me with just memories, all at once

[chorus]

"How Will I Know"

There's a boy I know, he's the one I dream of
Looks into my eyes, takes me to the clouds above
Ooh I lose control, can't seem to get enough
When I wake from dreaming, tell me is it really love

[Chorus:]
How will I know (Don't trust your feelings)
How will I know
How will I know (Love can be deceiving)
How will I know
How will I know if he really loves me
I say a prayer with every heart beat
I fall in love whenever we meet
I'm asking you what you know about these things
How will I know if he's thinking of me
I try to phone but I'm too shy (can't speak)
Falling in love is all bitter sweet
This love is strong why do I feel weak

Oh, wake me, I'm shaking, wish I had you near me now
Said there's no mistaking, what I feel is really love

[chorus]

If he loves me, if he loves me not [X3]

[chorus]

"I Will Always Love You"

If I should stay
I would only be in your way
So I'll go but I know
I'll think of you every step of the way

And I... will always love you, ooh
Will always love you
You
My darling, you...
Mmm-mm

Bittersweet memories –
That is all I'm taking with me.
So good-bye.
Please don't cry:
We both know I'm not what you, you need

And I... will always love you
I... will always love you
You, ooh

[Instrumental / Sax solo]

I hope life treats you kind
And I hope you have all you've dreamed of
And I wish you joy and happiness
But above all this I wish you love

And I... will always love you
I will always love you
I will always love you
I will always love you

I will always love you
I, I will always love you.

You.
Darling, I love you.
I'll always...
I'll always love you.
Ooh
Ooh

RAP

Rap music is a music genre consisting of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching, break dancing, and graffiti writing.Other elements include sampling or synthesis and beatboxing. The term hip hop music is sometimes used synonymously with the term rap music, though rapping is not a required component of hip hop music; the genre may also incorporate other elements of hip hop culture, including DJing and scratching, beatboxing, and instrumental tracks. In the 1980s hip hop developed more complex styles.First, a fusion of hip hop music with electro can be observed. In addition,a use of reverb and echo as texture and playful sound effects was introduces. The mid-1980s was marked by the influence of rock music. Heavy usage of the new generation of drum machines such as the Oberheim DMX and Roland 808 models was a characteristic of many 1980s songs. The lyrical content of hip hop evolved as well. The early styles presented in the 1970s soon were replaced with metaphorical lyrics over more complex, multi-layered instrumentals
